One US fluid oz (fl oz) equals approximately 29.57 milliliters (mL). This is often rounded to the following:

    1 fl oz = 30 mL

    8 fl oz = 240 mL

Here is a conversion table for oz to mL, so you don’t have to do the math:

    6 180
    7 210
    8 240

How many tablespoons in a cup?

There are 16 tablespoons in a cup. You can also do volume measurements with a tablespoon or other measuring spoons. This can be helpful if the amounts you’re measuring are too small for cups.

Something important to know is that US fluid ounces are not the same as Imperial fluid ounces. If you are in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, or elsewhere, different measurement systems can have an impact on finicky baking recipes. Having different measuring cups and using a food scale can help with consistent results in baking.

Here is a table to convert US volume measurements to international measurements:

Measurement Unit8 US Fluid Ounces equals...
    US teaspoon (tsp) 48
    US tablespoon (Tbsp) 16

How many ounces are in 1 qt?

There are 4 cups, or 32 ounces in one quart (United States).

How many ounces are in one gallon?

There are 16 cups, or 128 liquid ounces in one gallon (US).

Is liquid measuring cup the same as dry?

No, measuring cups for liquids are often made of clear plastic or glass. This makes it easier to ensure the level of the liquid is even when looking at the cup at eye level. Dry measuring cups are often opaque and the measurement line is meant to be leveled with a butter knife (source).

how many ounces in a cup

Though they’re different tools, you can still use liquid measuring cups for dry materials and vice versa. That’s because a one cup liquid measuring cup holds the same volume as a one cup dry measuring cup. For the most accurate measurements however, it’s best to use the right type of measuring cup for your ingredients.

Is 8oz equal to a cup in dry measure?

8 ounces to cups dry may be a different conversion than for liquid fluid ingredients. That is because we are often talking about ounces of weight for dry ingredients, not volumes. For example, one ounce of shredded cheese by weight is typically ¼ cup in volume.

When you see dry ingredients measured in ounces, it may be easiest to convert them to gram measurements. That way there’s no chance of confusing weight ounces and volume ounces.

    Ounces to Grams Conversions

Here is a table converting 8 oz to grams, as well as other ounce weight measurements to grams:

    Ounces Dry Weight (oz)Grams (g)*
    1 28
    2 57
    3 85
    4 113
    5 142
    6 170
    7 198
    8 227
    16 (1 lb.) 454
    32 (2 lb.) 907
    48 (3 lb.) 1361 (1.361 kg)
    64 (4 lb.) 1814 (1.814 kg)
    *rounded to nearest whole number

How do I measure dry ounces?

The best way to measure dry ounces (weights) is to use a food scale. If you need to measure dry ounces by volume, I recommend using measuring cups and spoons intended for dry ingredients.

    cups ounces

How can I measure 8 ounces without a scale?

If you don’t have a food scale, the product packaging may be helpful in measuring ingredients. For example, if your cheese comes in an 8-ounce package, and you need 4 ounces for a recipe, simply use half the package.

Another method is to find the weight to volume conversion for the dry ingredient you are using. However, I don’t recommend using this method for measuring dry ingredients in baking, as it doesn't provide the most accurate results.

How many cups is 8 ounces of dry ingredients?

If we are talking about 8 ounces of weight (227 grams), the number of cups varies depending on the dry ingredient you’re using. For example, 8 ounces of shredded cheese is about 2 cups and 8 ounces of butter is two sticks. Check out the FAQs below for more help in converting 8 ounces of dry ingredients to cups.
