➕ How to Cook Teriyaki Salmon in Air Fryer
Here are the step-by-step directions for how to make the best teriyaki salmon in the air fryer:
- Remove pin bones from your teriyaki air fryer salmon. Place the salmon in a large Pyrex container and cover with ½ cup of teriyaki sauce marinade. Let the salmon marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Carefully lift the fish from the marinade and place skin up in your air fryer basket or tray. If the salmon has any very thin edges, fold them under so they don’t dry out. The salmon fillets should be in a single layer to allow for maximum air circulation.
- Air fry salmon for 7 minutes at 390 degrees Fahrenheit (200C). (No preheat needed!) While the salmon cooks, take 2 tablespoons of marinade (if thin) and whisk with 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum. Discard the rest of the marinade.
- Flip the salmon, brush the flesh with the thickened marinade, and air fry for 3-7 minutes more at 390F (200C).
- The minimum safe internal temp for fish is 145F (63C). Check the salmon with a meat thermometer and add cooking time if needed. When the air fried teriyaki salmon is done, you can drizzle with fresh teriyaki sauce and serve. Enjoy!
Note: I tend to take the salmon out a little early because I find it too dry at 145F (63C). To avoid overcooked fish, you definitely want to be careful not to go over that temperature.

Do you have to flip salmon in air fryer?
Yes, I do recommend flipping your air fryer salmon for more even cooking. If not using a marinade, flipping helps get the salmon skin crisp, and it helps prevent the salmon from drying out.

You can use a quick homemade teriyaki sauce or a bottled teriyaki sauce for this recipe. I used the gluten free Thrive Market no soy teriyaki sauce, and it was so good here! It has a coconut aminos sauce base but gave my air fryer salmon a brown sugar soy sauce flavor.
Another option is to use my sugar free teriyaki sauce recipe instructions. If you don’t want it no sugar, use honey in the recipe instead for air fryer honey teriyaki salmon.
I tested this recipe with a Kalorik Air Fryer Oven, and I also made Ninja air fryer teriyaki salmon. You can make baked salmon with teriyaki glaze in a Ninja Foodi, Philips, Nuwave, Pampered Chef, Actifry, Instant Pot Vortex, Cosori, Breville, or another air fryer too.
However, cooking times will need to be adjusted depending on the air fryer you use and thickness of filets. Always check the food early the first time you try any new air fryer recipe. A small air fryer basket tends to cook faster than a large air fryer oven.
Some other things that are helpful in this recipe are:
- Pastry brush
- Whisk
- Meat thermometer
You’ll also need a food-safe container to marinate salmon in. Here are the glass containers that I use.
Please note that you don’t need parchment paper, foil, or another air fryer liner for this recipe. These may make it harder for the air fryer to properly circulate hot air around the salmon.
What is a good seasoning for salmon in the air fryer?
What’s good to season salmon with? What enhances the flavor of salmon? I use teriyaki marinade to flavor salmon, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and scallions after air frying. Here are some other seasonings for salmon:

- Onion or garlic powder
- Cajun spice
- Italian seasoning
- Fresh parsley and other herbs

🌡️ How to Store Leftover Salmon
According to the USDA, leftover teriyaki salmon filet lasts up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator. I’d play it safe and try to consume it within 1-2 days. Make sure to use a covered container so the fishy aroma doesn’t transfer to other foods in the fridge.
You can reheat the salmon in the microwave (in a microwave-safe bowl) on high for 1-2 minutes. Alternatively, gently reheat the salmon over medium heat in a skillet on the stovetop.
🥶 How to Freeze Salmon Teriyaki
You can freeze air fryer salmon teriyaki, but the texture isn’t as good when thawed. Store it in an airtight container or a freezer bag with the air pressed out. To thaw, place the salmon in the fridge for 24 hours.

FAQs
Can you cook air fryer teriyaki salmon frozen?
Should salmon be thawed before cooking in air fryer? It doesn’t have to be! Here are my directions for cooking frozen salmon in air fryer. If trying this method, you’ll have to brush the teriyaki sauce on the salmon after it has partially air fried.
How do you cook salmon in an air fryer without drying it out?
To keep salmon from drying out, try using a marinade before air frying. You also need to be careful not to overcook the fish. Try not to cook the salmon above the minimum safe temp for fish of 145F (63C).
Should I wrap my salmon in foil in the air fryer?
You can put foil in air fryer for salmon, but it’s not needed in this salmon recipe.
Do you cook salmon skin up or down in air fryer?
Both! Most air fryer salmon recipes have you flip the salmon halfway through cooking time. In general, I don’t have a preference for starting the salmon skin side up or down. In this recipe, we’re ending skin side down so we can brush extra teriyaki sauce on the flesh.
Is butter or oil better for salmon?
Salmon is a fatty fish, so you don’t need much (or any) added fat to cook it. Olive oil is a better choice than butter for cooking salmon if you want an option lower in saturated fat. However, many prefer the taste of butter for cooking fish, and it is a key ingredient in delicious garlic butter.

This is a level 1 recipe (may help support fat loss). Salmon is a heart-healthy fatty fish that’s rich in the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Leaving the skin on fish leaves it more moist and flavorful, and also preserves the healthy fat. Salmon is also one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D. If you’ve been looking for nutritious protein sources to add to meals, salmon is a super choice. The Dietary Guidelines recommends that adults eat at least 8 ounces of seafood per week (source).
