This Costco chicken pot pie review for 2024 will tell you everything you need to know about this delicious comfort food. Find out how long do you bake a chicken pot pie from Costco, get calories, nutrition information, price, and more. Learn about the Kirkland Signature chicken pot pie and Costco frozen pot pie options, so you can buy the one that’s best for you.
Are Costco chicken pot pies good? My local Costco actually has two pot pie options, and both are tasty (depending on what you like, of course).
The first Costco pot pie (AKA the Kirkland chicken pot pie) can be found in the Costco prepared foods section. This is a fresh, unbaked pot pie that weighs a whopping 5 lbs. (2.27 kg) or more. It contains big pieces of chicken, peas, carrots, and a creamy chicken pot pie gravy.
My biggest complaint about the Kirkland pot pie is that it’s saltier than I’d make at home. Some may think it’s too salty. That said, the high salt content is nothing unusual for prepared deli foods, and we still thought this pot pie tasted good.
You can find Costco’s second pot pie option in the frozen foods section. There you’ll find 8 packs of Marie Callender’s chicken pot pies. The Marie Callender pot pies weigh 10 ounces each (0.28 kg).
Today we’ll cover how long do you cook Costco chicken pot pie (both kinds). So, let’s get to it!
➕ Costco Chicken Pot Pie (How Long to Cook)
So you got a Costco chicken pot pie- how to cook it? Here are the step-by-step directions for how to cook Costco chicken pot pie (from prepared foods section):
Preheat the oven to 375F (190C).
Remove the plastic outer shell from the Costco chicken pot pie. Put the pot pie, in its metal pie tin, on a cookie sheet. (Hot tip! Brush a beaten egg on top of the crust for an extra crisp crust.)
Place the cookie sheet on a rack 1/3 down from the top of the oven. Bake the pot pie for 1¼-1½ hours, until it reaches an internal temperature of 165F (74C) with a meat thermometer.
Let the pie cool for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
Should I cover my pot pie with foil?
I did not need to cover the Costco pot pie with foil, and the crust became nicely browned. If your crust is becoming too browned during baking, you can cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil.
How to cut Costco chicken pot pie?
To cut chicken pot pie from Costco, take a sharp knife and slice it into 8 wedges. The first slice of pot pie always comes out a bit messy, but it tastes just as good as the others. To get neater slices of pot pie, chill the cooked pot pie, slice it, then reheat the slices.
How do you know when pot pie is done?
The best way to know when a pot pie is done is check the pot pie internal temperature with a meat thermometer. The inside of the middle of a fully cooked pot pie should reach a minimum safe internal temp of 165F (74C).
How do you keep the bottom crust of chicken pot pie from getting soggy?
How do you get a crispy crust on the bottom of a pie? For homemade chicken pot pie, try partially prebaking the bottom crust in a metal pie tin before adding the filling. (Your Costco pot pie will turn out great if you follow the baking directions provided, so no worries about this.)
How to freeze Costco chicken pot pie?
IMHO, the best way to freeze chicken pot pie from Costco is to bake it, slice it, and freeze individual portions. If you pack the portions in freezer and microwave-safe airtight containers, reheating the frozen pot pie is easy.

If you have a severe food allergy, the Costco chicken pot pie is not for you.

The Costco chicken pot pie price is $4.99 per pound, or approximately $25-30 per pie. Please note that this is the 2024 Costco pot pie price (for a deli pot pie). Prices are subject to change and may vary by Costco location.

🥧 Costco Chicken Pot Pie Recipe Ingredients
Here are the ingredients for Costco chicken pot pie:
- Filling (water, chicken, carrots, green peas, onions, modified corn starch, chicken stock concentrate, vegetable purees, nonfat dry milk, hydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed corn protein, salt, sugar, corn starch, yeast extract, natural flavors, onion powder, rice flour, maltodextrin, turmeric, soybean oil, wheat flour, celery, canola oil, carrot powder, extractives of carrot, xanthan gum, spice extractives, parsley, thyme, citric acid, nisin (preservative), black pepper)
- Crust (enriched flour, vegetable oil, water, sugar, dextrose, salt, citric acid)
- Rotisserie chicken (chicken breast meat, water, seasoning)
The store signs say that there is 1.5 lbs of rotisserie chicken per pot pie (680 grams). Lots of chicken! It’s oven ready, and packed with baby peas and carrots.
The one thing to notice here is that this pot pie definitely counts as an ultra-processed food. It has preservatives and other additives you would probably not add to a chicken pot pie from scratch. This is a price we tend to pay for convenient ready-to-bake meals.
🌡 Do Costco pot pies need to be refrigerated?
Yes, you must keep Costco chicken pot pies in the refrigerator. Do not leave your pot pie out at room temp for more than 1-2 hours, regardless of whether it’s cooked.
How long does Costco chicken pot pie last? How long can uncooked chicken pot pie stay in the fridge? Costco pot pies have a “sell-by” date that is three days after the pack date. For optimal freshness, bake Costco pot pie up to 3-4 days after the pack date.
How long is Costco chicken pot pie good for after sell-by date?
I would aim to bake Costco chicken pot pie within 24 hours of the sell-by date.
🥶 Cooking Frozen Chicken Pot Pie
Cooking chicken pot pie from frozen? Here are the Costco chicken pot pie cooking instructions for Marie Callendar’s frozen pot pies:
Preheat the oven to 400F (200C).
Remove outer wrapper from the frozen pot pie, but leave it in its paper tray. Wrap the edges of the crust with aluminum foil to keep it from burning.
Place pot pie on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven for 50 minutes. Ensure pot pie has reached a minimum safe temp of 165F (74C) using a meat thermometer. Add additional cooking time if needed.
Let pot pie rest for 5 minutes to cool before serving.
🔥 Costco Chicken Pot Pie in Air Fryer
The fresh Costco chicken pot pie is 11 inches in diameter, and won’t fit in most air fryers, including air fryer ovens. If you buy the smaller frozen pot pies, here are directions for cooking frozen pot pie in the air fryer.
You can also reheat Costco pot pie in the air fryer after cooking. Put a cooked and chilled slice of pot pie on an aluminum pan. Bake in the middle of an air fryer oven for 3-5 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200C).
👉 Can You Microwave Costco Chicken Pot Pie
You cannot microwave an uncooked Costco pot pie from the prepared foods section. The pie tin the pot pie comes in is not microwave safe. Also, microwaves can’t give the pot pie a nice golden brown crust.
You can, however, reheat cooked slices of Costco chicken pot pie in the microwave. To do so, place the chilled cooked pot pie on a microwave-safe plate. Cover with a paper towel, and microwave for 1½ minutes on high. (Keep in mind that microwave times may vary.)
If the pot pie was cooked and frozen, you can reheat it from frozen in the microwave. Place the frozen pot pie on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 3 minutes on high.
The microwave is my favorite way to reheat leftover potpie, since it’s fast and heats the filling well.
🥗 How to Serve Costco Chicken Pot Pie
Costco pot pie works as an all-in-one comfort food meal, but adding green vegetables is a smart choice. Here are some side dishes for Costco chicken pot pie:

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule
This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). Is Costco chicken pot pie healthy? As always, it depends on what you’re looking for. Nutritionally, the Costco chicken pot pie is too high in sodium to be a good fit for low sodium diets. This is particularly true if you eat twice Costco’s suggested serving size (which is an entirely reasonable portion size, IMO). In terms of macros, about 50% of the calories in Costco’s chicken pot pie come from fat. About 33% of the calories are from carbs, and only 17% from protein. As with many high fat/high carb combo foods, most of us find pot pie easy to overindulge in. All of that said, pot pie is pretty delicious, and I think that’s the point. If you’re looking for a comfort food dish that’s easy to make, the Costco pot pie might be just what you need. There’s something about cozy fall and winter foods like this that can really soothe the soul. It’s true that pot pie is loaded with white flour and added fat, but you’re also getting some chicken and veggies. Sure, you could make a “healthier” pot pie from scratch, but many of us don’t have the time or inclination to do so. Luckily, most healthy diets do have room for occasional indulgences, and this is one I definitely enjoy. I hope you do too 🙂 Nutrition information is for one 5-ounce serving of Costco pot pie, the serving size suggested by Costco. A more realistic serving may be double this (10 ounces), or about 1/8 of the pot pie.

We have a mustard allergy in our family. Is there mustard in the chicken pot pie?
Hi Helen! The Costco chicken pot pie isn’t made in a dedicated facility, so there may be a risk of cross contact with mustard-containing foods, even though the pot pie itself doesn’t have mustard in the ingredients list. If you or family members have a severe allergy, I’d skip this one.
Don’t buy it it’s is terrible way too salty!!! After one meal we threw most of it in the garbage. Waste of money.
Oh no! That’s a bummer your family didn’t like it. We thought it was salty too, but definitely not to the point it ruined things for us- we enjoyed it! I wonder if the pot pies are more heavily seasoned in some regions than others. I get visitors from all over the world, so I’d need to go on a global pot pie eating tour to find out for sure. haha 🙂
Ws hoping for the recipe for this pie it was really good! I ate it by myself over 3 days.
Hi Autumn, I completely agree with your pie assessment! Haha 🙂 To make it at home, you’d need a really big metal pie plate, but then I was thinking Costco is giving you one when you buy the pot pie. So if you’re careful not to cut the pie tin, you could use it to make a copycat recipe after eating the pot pie. Just scale up your favorite pot pie recipe a bit (one that has similar ingredients to Costco’s), and use the Costco pot pie directions to cook it… I’m going to have to try this, and I’ll post when I do! Thank you for visiting and for the idea 🙂 Summer
Hi I live in Langley B.C. and I have been trying to buy Marie Callenders frozen pot pies for the last few months. And Costco doesn’t seem to have them have you quit stocking them in Costco? Thank you for your time. From a frustrated shopper.
Hi Leslie, I’d ask at the customer service of your local Costco about the pot pies. If they did stop carrying them, they might bring them back if customers start requesting them. Good luck!
I bought the Costco Pot Pie, but I’m not going to be able to cook it for a couple weeks, so I will need to freeze it. Do you have a suggestion for cooking THIS pie from frozen?
Hi Regina, great question! I’d freeze the uncooked pot pie and then allow it to thaw in the refrigerator for about 24 hours before baking. It’s such a big pie, and the cooking time is already pretty long, so there’s a risk the middle won’t cook through before the edges are overcooked if starting from frozen. That said, if you really wanted to try baking it from frozen regardless, I’d start with the 1.25-1.5 hours it takes for the fresh pie, then cover it with foil and keep going until it reaches the safe temp. Thank you for visiting 🙂 Summer
The latest Chicken Pot Pie was so salty, it was almost uneatable. I has always been to salty for my tastes, but this one was over the top.
Hi Ronald, good to know and sorry to hear that! I’d probably take what’s left of it to customer service and see if you can get a refund.
