Neither HelloFresh nor Green Chef is available in Alaska and Hawaii. Green Chef is also not available in certain parts of Louisiana.
Both plans do expect you to have very basic kitchen equipment. I’m talking things like pots, pans, mixing bowls, measuring spoons, and a baking sheet. A meat thermometer is also important (unless you’re choosing one of the vegetarian plans).
The only food ingredients needed for the recipes are butter (or margarine), cooking oil, salt, and pepper. Some recipes may also require sugar.
➕ How is Green Chef different from Hello Fresh?
HelloFresh was named America’s #1 Meal Kit by USA Today. Though this review is U.S.-focused, I should mention they are currently the world’s largest meal kit company. Green Chef, on the other hand, is more health-focused, and is America’s #1 Meal Kit for eating well. They are the first USDA-certified organic meal kit company.
Green Chef and HelloFresh are both meal kit delivery services that make cooking at home simple. You sign up for a box, based on your needs and preferences, that gets delivered to your home each week. Inside the box you’ll find step-by-step recipes, pre-measured ingredients, and nutritional information.
The purpose of these kits is to make homecooking easier, while still being affordable. You get to enjoy the fun part of homecooked meals (the cooking and eating). The time-consuming (and maybe tedious!) grocery shopping and menu planning has already been done for you.
🍽️ Green Chef Menu
Green Chef prides itself on using “clean ingredients,” which includes non-GMO, organic, sustainably sourced produce. They advertise themselves as being the most sustainable meal kit, offsetting 100% of in-box plastic and 100% of their carbon emissions.
Green Chef offers foods that are largely certified organic, though some foods cannot be certified organic. (There’s no such thing as certified organic sea salt, to give an example they use.)
Choose the Keto plan for low carb and grain-free menu options. Gut & Brain Health meals are high fiber and nutrient dense to reduce bloat and increase energy.
The Plant Based menu has all plant-based options for veggie and vegan diets. The Mediterranean meal plan offers a variety of meat, poultry, seafood, and vegetarian choices. Quick & Easy menu options are ready in 25 minutes or less.
The recipe cards for Green Chef all provide the preparation time, major allergens, and calories. The meals I chose all had a cooking time of around 30 minutes, which seemed to be typical.
Recipes in the Keto plan also provide the net carbs. All meals I happened to choose were listed as certified gluten-free by the Gluten Intolerance Group.
Like HelloFresh, none of the plans are seven days per week. This leaves you some flexibility for going out to restaurants, dining at friends’ homes, and so on.
Green Chef recipes will also teach you some new cooking techniques and terminology. For example, one of my recipes discussed the Cajun cooking technique of making “blackened” food. Spices typically used in blackening were covered.
😋 Does Green Chef taste good?
Yes! We tried the Balanced Living plan (now “Mediterranean”) for this Green Chef review, under the 2-person, 3 meal plan. It was perfect for my husband and I for work-at-home lunches.
I’d say Green Chef meals have a bit more of a health focus than the HelloFresh meals. However, I was pleasantly surprised that they did not sacrifice flavor for nutrition. We truly enjoyed every Green Chef meal that we made. Here’s what we tried:
- Cajun Shrimp & Pickled Corn Relish with Cheddar Mashed Potatoes and Sauteed Collards
- Blackened Tilapia with Chipotle Aioli with Lime, Roasted Veggies & Pepitas, and Guacamole
- Chili & Ginger Pork Meatballs, Stir-Fried Broccoli, Cabbage, Bell Pepper & Shiitakes, Rice
Yum, am I right?!? I was really feeling the southeastern U.S.-inspired meal options from both menus. All these meals were in the 700-800 calorie range (not low calorie, but perfectly reasonable for a lunch or dinner in my household).
They all tasted as decadent as they sound and would definitely not be mistaken for diet food. I appreciated that Green Chef was generous with the cheese and butter in the cheddar mashed potatoes, for instance. Since you’re cooking at home, you could choose to cut back, but they haven’t forced it on you. (Love it!)
All of that said, you’re getting nourishing, meals with organic ingredients and a whole foods focus. The blackened tilapia was a Paleo meal, and the vegetarian meals also sounded lovely. Whether your preferred way of eating is low-carb, plant-based, or label-less, you’ll find wholesome meals with Green Chef.

🍽️ Hello Fresh Menu
The HelloFresh menu features chef-curated recipes that fit a variety of tastes. The most popular HelloFresh option is the 3 meals per week for 2 people plan.
None of the plans are seven days per week. This allows you some flexibility for eating out at restaurants, or cooking recipes of your choosing.
Some ingredients used by HelloFresh are organic. However, the real focus with HelloFresh is having fun.
The plant-based (Veggie) menu is “full of seasonal, naturally produced veggies.” Family-friendly meals are kid tested, quick, and easy to cook. The Fit & Wholesome meals are perfect for a balanced lifestyle.
There are delicious pasta meals, sandwiches, international dishes, Quick & Easy options, and much more. If you don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen, prep and cook times are given when picking meals.
The recipe cards for HelloFresh all provide the prep time, cook time, and calories. You can also learn new cooking techniques and terminology from the cards. Each recipe also features a certain spice, some of which are bound to be new to you.
The HelloFresh recipes I cooked featured ancho chili powder, Herbes de Provence, and Tuscan heat spice. The Tuscan spice was a HelloFresh blend, so you can’t find it in stores.
I noticed my HelloFresh box contained a lot of familiar grocery store brands. PIllsbury, Philadelphia cream cheese, and Marzetti all made an appearance.
Since some of the recipes are fairly involved, it’s nice that they don’t expect you to make every single thing from scratch. If I don’t have time to go to the store, maybe I don’t have time to make biscuit dough from scratch either, kwim?
🌾 Is there a gluten free Hello Fresh plan?
No, HelloFresh plans are not tailored to specific allergens. When specific recipes contain a top allergen (e.g., wheat, dairy, or nuts) they are labeled as such. Individual ingredients are stored in packaging that limits cross-contact.
I think these meal kits could work for those with mild food intolerances. HelloFresh claims that some customers with allergy requirements can make it work by substituting with certain ingredients from their own kitchen.
📏 Can you do Hello Fresh and Weight Watchers?
You could calculate your WW points for HelloFresh meals, but it will take a bit of work. You’ll need to enter the ingredients for the recipes separately (so zero point foods are not counted). Some Hello Fresh recipes may be high in WW points and need to be split into smaller servings.
😋 Does Hello Fresh taste good?
It’s subjective, but yes, we thought our HelloFresh meals were DELICIOUS. I was sent a box of three HelloFresh meals (4 servings each) to review. I chose meals based on taste and our typical eating pattern, so my answer is definitely biased!
Here’s what we tried:
- BBQ Baby Back Ribs with Chili Lime Corn Salad & Jalapeno Cheddar Biscuit Bombs
- Tuscan Garlic Butter Chicken with Creamy Kale & Paprika-Roasted Carrots
- Cherry Balsamic Sirloin with Herby Fingerling Potatoes & Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Don’t those sound SO GOOD?!? The ribs meal appeared to be a special feast available for Memorial Day weekend, and it did not disappoint! (Yup, I didn’t choose all the “healthiest” options, and I am not guilty about it at all.)
BTW, all recipe photos here were taken by me, using only ingredients sent in the boxes. I didn’t add any additional garnishes or embellishments to the plates.
These meals are fancier than what I’d typically whip up on a weeknight. For one, I don’t typically make multiple recipes for the main dish and sides. If it’s not a one-pot meal, I’ll usually put more effort into one protein or side and keep everything else simple.
With these meals, everything was a flavor explosion! No plain roasted vegetables here.
Most of these meals incorporated 3-4 different recipes. However, everything was already measured, and prep was clearly outlined on the recipe cards. That meant I could make one of these meals in the time it would normally take me to do one recipe.
As much as I love to cook, I can’t regularly pull off meals of this caliber on my own. IMVHO, that’s the biggest advantage of HelloFresh.

🤑 Why is Green Chef so expensive?
One reason Green Chef is more expensive than HelloFresh is because they use certified organic ingredients. The shipping also used to be more expensive, but now each plan has a similar flat rate. When I ordered, my HelloFresh box was shipped by UPS, while Green Chef was shipped by LaserShip.
Your total cost doesn’t depend on which meal plan you choose (Plant-Powered and Balanced Living used to be less than Keto). However, it does depend on how many people you’re feeding and how many meals you want per week. Some of these plans will have you covered for dinner for over half the month!
💸 Hello Fresh Cost

❓ Are HelloFresh meal kits worth the money?
I do think HelloFresh kits are worth the money. If you consider the foods and meal ideas you get, plus the time it saves you, it’s a deal.
Depending on the plan, you may not spend any more with HelloFresh than you’d spend with a CSA. Unlike the CSA, you know exactly how all the foods will be used. There’s less of a chance that anything will go to waste.
🤝 Does HelloFresh own Green Chef?
Are Green Chef and Hello Fresh the same company? HelloFresh is a German-based company that acquired U.S.-based Green Chef in 2018. Each meal kit company offers something a little different, and together will appeal to a broad range of needs and preferences.
👨👨👧👧 Who are food kits like Hello Fresh good for?
I think there are many sorts of people that a meal delivery service could work for. While I was cooking my Green Chef and Hello Fresh meals, I was thinking about who would enjoy these kits the most. Here’s my (not exhaustive!) list:
- Busy professionals who don’t have time for menu planning and shopping but still want nutritious homecooked meals.
- College students and young adults living on their own who don’t have a lot of confidence in the kitchen. (Would make a great gift!)
- Parents of young children who want to eat healthier but hate dragging the kids to the store.
- Apartment dwellers and others living in small spaces with limited room to store extra spices and ingredients. HelloFresh and Green Chef usually gives you just what you need so there’s no waste. (These programs are great for empty nesters and couples without children for the same reason.)
- People who want to lose weight but tend to hit the fast food drive-thru a bit too much. These meal kits will encourage you to eat at home more, and calorie information is provided on the recipe cards. HelloFresh even has a “Fit & Wholesome” plan, so you can choose lower calorie options.
- Anyone feeling bored with their usual meals. Both HelloFresh and Green Chef can help you freshen up your menu with inventive and flavorful meals. You will likely try new spices and flavor combinations with these services.
- Foodies who like cooking but not shopping and planning.
You could also try gifting HelloFresh to the person who has “everything.” Most of us appreciate things that help make life a little easier and we all need to keep buying food!
🧊 How Food Stays Fresh
HelloFresh and Green Chef meals are both shipped in sturdy boxes with insulated liners and ice packs. This allows the ingredients to stay cool for 24-48 hours past the expected delivery date. They even monitor local weather patterns so the packaging can be modified (if needed) based on the weather in your region!
After opening the box, I found the recipe cards and several paper bags. Each bag contained nearly all of the ingredients needed for one recipe.
Beneath the paper bags, the individually wrapped protein foods were nestled among large ice packs. I loved that the proteins were packed separately. This kept the other ingredients from getting contaminated with meat, poultry, and seafood juices.
The paper bags can go right in the refrigerator. The protein foods can go in the fridge or freezer, depending on when you make the recipe.
Fresh seafood really shouldn’t hang out in the fridge for more than 24 hours. Since I was making a couple of seafood meals, I put some of the fish in the freezer.
🌱 Sustainability
Both meal kit boxes appear to come with a lot of packaging. However, the first thing you’ll notice when you get your boxes are the sustainability claims.
HelloFresh’s box claims they offset 100% of their carbon emissions and that they reduce food waste by at least 25% (compared to going to the store). Green Chef’s box says they offset 100% of their carbon emissions and 100% of the plastic in every box. They say they are the most sustainable meal kit.
Meal kits may help you to reduce the food waste in your kitchen due to pre-portioned ingredients. You won’t end up with half an onion or head of lettuce going bad because it wasn’t used in a recipe. Everything gets used.
The cardboard boxes, paper bags, and some of the plastic packaging is recyclable. The gel in the HelloFresh ice packs and Green Chef ice packs can be put in the trash. The plastic film on the pack should be disposed of as directed on the pack. The ice packs are also reusable.
The food in both boxes was well-packed and remained chilled even in the heat. I was happy to learn that both HelloFresh and Green Chef are mindful of their environmental impact as well. A lot of the packaging clearly states on it that it is recyclable.
Is Hello Fresh apartment delivery possible?
Yes, and you don’t need to be home to receive a Hello Fresh or Green Chef delivery. Your box will be sent to your front door, mailroom, or mail pick-up location. The contents are insulated and should be OK without refrigeration until the end of the day.
✨ What if you’re single?
Singletons don’t have to miss out on the fun! If you’re cooking for one, you can order the 2-person plan and use it for lunch and dinner.
🥶 Can you freeze Hello Fresh meals?
Yes and no. Some of the ingredients included in HelloFresh meals (such as fresh fingerling potatoes) are not freezer friendly. You can freeze the proteins and certain other meal components if you cannot make a dish within a couple of days.
🥩 Can you freeze Hello Fresh meat?
Yes, the meat and seafood are individually packaged in the HelloFresh and Green Chef boxes and can be frozen. HelloFresh recommends keeping all the proteins frozen until a few hours before use.

🏆 Pros Summary
So, why do people purchase dinner kits like HelloFresh and Green Chef? One reason is that it’s just plain fun to learn new cooking techniques and tricks. (I’ll definitely be roasting potatoes and Brussels sprouts cut side down from now on!)
Ultimately though, I think it comes down to convenience, choice, and flexibility.
Convenience
Convenience because there’s much less planning involved compared to regular homecooked meals. Prep has been minimized with little to no measuring and a lot less chopping. (Some of the veggies come chopped for you.)
You’ll save time and money on gas or public transportation to the grocery store. You’ll also have to deal with less food waste, without having to expend the mental energy figuring out how to use up leftover ingredients. Small recipe details like not peeling potatoes for mash and cooking collards with the stems kept nearly everything out of the trash.
Just look at this cute mini bottle of balsamic vinegar, the exact amount I needed for the recipe!
The recipes all flowed nicely; I always knew what to do next. Both HelloFresh and Green Chef provide an easy and low-stress cooking experience.
And if you want to make a recipe again? Since you keep the recipes you make, you can create favorites again and again. (Paprika carrots, here we come!)
Choice
You also get a lot of choice. The recipes you cook are customized to fit your tastes since you picked the meals. You can use your favorite cooking oils and fats, since they don’t supply those (butter or margarine, olive oil or canola, etc.).
You also control the salt shaker (though some of the added sauces may contain a lot of sodium). This is a huge advantage over restaurant meals, many of which are high in sodium. You’ll also get to experiment with new spices and ingredients, but only for recipes that interest you.
The portion sizes are realistic (not teeny tiny) and appropriate for hungry adults. You can clean your plate or choose a smaller portion; it’s up to you.
You can pick a light meal or special diet option or indulge in all the cheesy, carb-y, meaty goodness you want. Again, it’s your choice.
Flexibility
Finally, we come to flexibility. You can choose to cancel or modify both the HelloFresh and Green Chef plans with relatively short notice. If you’re going on vacation, it’s easy to stop deliveries for a week or two.
If you need to add more meals or fewer meals, more servings or fewer servings, those changes are only a few clicks away. These meal kits are designed to fold seamlessly into your lifestyle. You don’t have to try to fit yourself to them.
👎 Cons Summary
This is an honest review, and I don’t feel it’s right to share benefits without also sharing downsides. IMVHO, here are the main disadvantages to HelloFresh and Green Chef:
- These plans are not really intended for people with severe food allergies. Though the foods are individually packaged, there is still a risk that cross-contact with allergens may occur.
- Those highly interested in food sourcing and eating locally may be disappointed that they may not know which farm foods were sourced from.
- You can’t easily substitute ingredients in recipes (though you could make changes with ingredients purchased at home).
- Several of the recipes call for an unmeasured “drizzle of oil.” This can be an unrealized source of a lot of unwanted additional calories for those trying to lose weight.
- Some of the house blend spices might be hard to replicate if you want to recreate a recipe.
- Some of the meals created a lot of dirty pots, pans, and baking trays- sometimes 3-4 for one meal. (That said, you CAN choose meals with easier prep if you don’t want to deal with a big clean up.)
I think I would just like a dishwashing subscription service along with the meal kit service. Maybe that will be offered sometime in the future. (Hey, a girl can dream, right? Haha)
In all seriousness, we LOVE both Green Chef and HelloFresh. (I felt completely spoiled with all the special meals tbh, and I mean that in the best possible way.) There really isn’t much to discuss on the negative side of things.
I would be completely thrilled to receive a gift of HelloFresh or Green Chef deliveries for my birthday, just sayin. A little kitchen mess is totally worth it.

🥇 Which is better Green Chef or Hello Fresh?
HelloFresh is wonderful if you’re looking for the widest range of menu choices and don’t have strict dietary preferences. They should appeal to those who appreciate the familiarity of popular grocery store brands. HelloFresh is the more affordable of the two, and offers more kid-friendly options for family meals.
HelloFresh is also offered in a far greater range of locations than Green Chef. If you live outside of the U.S. and UK, Green Chef is not currently available to you.
Green Chef a better choice for those on certain special diets and those who are more selective about food sourcing and high quality ingredients. If you’re following a carb smart or vegan diet, or prefer to eat organic, Green Chef will be the better option for you. Those who shop in health food stores rather than conventional supermarkets should be happier with Green Chef.
We found both plans offered healthful, flavorful recipes that were packed with fresh produce and whole foods. HelloFresh seemed to offer more “fun food” options for those who are a little less health-minded.
In summary, I think both HelloFresh and Green Chef have a lot to offer and I’d buy either one. The one that is “best” really depends on what you’re looking for. Either way, get ready to fill your belly with some nourishing and scrumptious meals!
