Can you make mousse with protein powder? Yes! This protein chocolate mousse may not be traditional, but it makes a fast and delicious protein pudding for bodybuilding.

Traditional mousse recipes typically contain raw egg white. While egg whites are a great source of protein, eating raw eggs is a food safety risk. Additionally, raw egg white contains a substance called avidin, which can cause biotin deficiency if consumed regularly (source).

To make a healthy mousse recipe, you could cook the egg whites to destroy the avidin. Another option, for a quick mousse, is to whip up this protein powder mousse made with Greek yogurt.

High protein chocolate mousse is tasty, but no worries if chocolate isn’t your thing. You can also make vanilla protein mousse, salted caramel, or whatever flavor you’d prefer. Simply pick a protein powder with the flavor you think is best.

You’re welcome to use vanilla protein powder or another flavor instead. I used Tropeaka Protein in this recipe, which is a plant-based protein powder. You can also make this a whey protein mousse recipe by using whey protein powder.

You can use fat free Greek yogurt in this recipe. However, if you want your protein mousse to be extra creamy, use whole milk Greek yogurt instead. Remember, a healthy diet should never be completely fat free.

Greek yogurt and skyr are thicker and higher in protein than regular yogurt. Use one of those instead of regular yogurt if you want a protein-packed recipe.

I recommend using a sweetened protein powder, Greek yogurt, or both (depending on your preferences). Without any added sweetener, we didn’t feel this dessert was sweet enough. Use protein powder or yogurt sweetened with stevia or monk fruit to keep it sugar free.

If you’d like this recipe to be thinner, more like pudding than mousse, I also recommend having milk on hand. You can use plant based milk or dairy milk. For the most protein, use dairy milk, soy milk, or a protein-fortified almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk.

What are the three basic elements of a mousse?

Classic sweet mousse is a light and airy dessert made with whipped eggs (the aerator), heavy cream (the base), and sweetener. Flavorings, such as vanilla and spices, are also typically added. Less common in the US, there are also thick and creamy savory mousses made meat, fish, or vegetables (source).

What can I add to protein pudding?

I like to top this chocolate dessert with raspberries, whipped cream or coconut cream, and chocolate chips. Here are some other mix-ins and toppings for protein mousse variations:

  • Other fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)
  • Banana
  • Cacao nibs
  • White chocolate chips
  • Crushed cookies (for cookies and cream flavor)
  • Mini peanut butter cups
  • Granola or nuts
  • Peanut butter or almond butter
  • Seed butter
  • Jello powder

You could also stir in dark cocoa powder for a richer color. Another idea is to make healthy peanut butter mousse by swapping the protein powder for some pb2 powder. Try blending cottage cheese for a protein-packed alternative to the yogurt in this recipe.

️🌡️ How to Store Protein Mousse

According to the FoodKeeper app, you can safely keep yogurt in the fridge for up to 1-2 weeks from the date of purchase. Protein mousse without toppings should last the same length of time in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze protein mousse?

Yes, you can freeze protein mousse, though the texture may be different when thawed. If the protein mousse has separated, stir it back together before eating. Protein mousse and yogurt can be kept in the freezer for up to 1-2 months (source).

This is a level 1 recipe (may help support fat loss). Are protein puddings healthy? In general, protein puddings and mousses can be a convenient way to get more protein into your diet. Whether it is a healthy dessert for you depends on your needs.
Protein is considered the most filling macronutrient. Ensuring you get adequate protein in your meals and snacks may help you feel satisfied on fewer calories than you would with less protein. In theory, this may help you more comfortably maintain a calorie deficit if you have a weight loss goal.
With over 300 calories per serving, you can make this protein mousse into a small meal by adding some fruit on the side. If you need something higher in energy, consider adding some toast or crackers as well.
For those with active lifestyles, protein mousse also works as a high calorie snack that helps promote muscle recovery and repair.
It’s optimal for kids to get their nutritional needs met with whole foods rather than supplements like protein powder. That said, fun, hearty snacks like protein mousse may help certain children who are picky eaters and/or underweight. (Always consult with a physician or dietitian familiar with your child’s medical history when making decisions about their diet.)
