My sugar free dump cake recipe uses just 3 ingredients and has no sugar beyond what naturally occurs in fruit. This easy dessert is lower carb and lower calorie than classic dump cake without sacrificing flavor. Make it with fresh berries or your favorite no sugar added canned pie filling (such as strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, apple, or cherry) for a simple treat everyone will love.

Dump cake is a vintage dessert that typically combines cake mix, canned pie filling, and plenty of melted butter. This lighter version swaps in sugar free cake mix, no sugar added pie filling (or fresh fruit sweetened with a non-nutritive sweetener), and diet soda. It’s just as delicious as the original and wonderful served warm with no sugar added vanilla ice cream.
This was one of my favorite desserts during my 70-pound weight loss journey because it helped satisfy my sweet tooth without feeling deprived. I still make it today, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
🛒 Sugar Free Dump Cake Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make a no sugar dump cake:
- 1 box sugar free cake mix (approximately 1 lb/454g)
- 2 cans (20 ounces each) no sugar added pie filling (OR 6 cups fresh berries plus ⅓ cup Swerve granular)
- 18-20 ounces diet lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite Zero Sugar)

That’s it! You’ll find a printable recipe card below.
I usually buy a larger bottle of diet soda and measure out what I need because it’s often less expensive than purchasing smaller bottles. That’s why a large bottle appears in the ingredient photo.
Pillsbury renamed its sugar-free cake mix to “Zero Sugar Cake Mix,” but it’s the same thing. I used the Moist Supreme Classic Yellow variety, though any flavor will work. If you can’t find it locally, it’s also available on Amazon.
Since berries are in season here, I made the fresh fruit version this time using a combination of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. I like that there’s no chopping required, unlike when using strawberries. For a cozy fall dessert, try making an apple dump cake using no sugar added apple pie filling.
If you’re using fresh berries, you’ll also need a cup-for-cup sugar substitute. I prefer Swerve, but any granulated non-nutritive sweetener that measures like sugar should work well.
The only other equipment you’ll need is a 9×13-inch baking dish (23x33cm).
🍰 How to Make Sugar Free Dump Cake
Preheat your oven to 375F (190C). If using fresh berries, toss them with the Swerve. If using canned pie filling, simply open the cans. Spread the berries or pie filling evenly in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the fruit layer.

Slowly pour the diet soda over the cake mix, wetting as much of the surface as possible.
Important: Do not stir the ingredients together. Dump cakes are meant to be layered, and stirring can negatively affect the final texture.

Bake on an oven rack positioned about one-third down from the top of the oven for 35-45 minutes, until the fruit is hot and bubbling.
Let the cake cool for about 15-20 minutes before serving. It’s especially delicious served warm with a scoop of your favorite no sugar added ice cream.

Dump Cake Tip
The fruit filling in dump cakes become less runny after refrigeration, but I still think they’re at their best when served warm with ice cream.
Sugar Free Dump Cake Storage
Store leftover dump cake in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. You can also freeze leftovers, though the texture may change slightly after thawing.

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule
This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). By replacing the butter and added sugar found in traditional dump cake recipes and incorporating a generous amount of fruit, this version is lighter in calories while still delivering that familiar comfort food flavor. That said, it’s still a dessert rather than an everyday staple. I enjoy treats like this as part of an overall balanced eating pattern, and I find that sharing it with family and friends makes it even more enjoyable. Food is about both nourishment and pleasure, and I try to make room for both. Nutrition information for one serving and will vary depending on the specific ingredients you use. Carbohydrates listed are net carbs (total carbohydrates minus fiber and sugar alcohols, when applicable).
