  1. Cut the onion into individual petals as described above. Set aside.

  1. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper) together in a large shallow bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  1. Dip each onion petal in the flour mixture, then the milk mixture, and then place it back in the flour mixture to thoroughly coat it.
  1. Deep fry the petals in the heated oil for 4-5 minutes per side, flipping them with a slotted spoon or strainer. (If the oil is deep enough in the pot, you may not need to flip them.) Cook them in two batches, and reheat the oil to 400F (200C) between the batches.
  1. Allow the Outback bloom petals to cool and drain on paper towels before serving with bloom sauce.

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule

This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles).Outback bloomin’ onion petals are essentially deep-fried onion slices or pieces that were coated in white flour. While they can add flavor and crunch to your meals, they are not particularly healthy in terms of general nutrition due to the cooking method and the potential for excessive consumption of calories.
In short, they should be enjoyed in moderation due to their potential negative impact on health when consumed in excess. If you’re looking for healthier alternatives, consider using fresh, raw, or lightly cooked onions. You could also oven bake or air fry bloom petals to cut back on added oil.
Nutrition information is for one serving, and can vary depending on the size of the onion, how much of the batter sticks, and how much oil is absorbed.
