KFC Bowl Recipe
The KFC menu Famous bowl is a classic, but if you don’t live near a KFC, it’s easy to make at home! Here’s how to save a bit of money and make easy Kentucky Fried Chicken bowls at home.
KFC Chicken Bowl Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make four servings of my copycat Famous Bowl KFC recipe:
- 24 ounces frozen popcorn chicken (about 24 pieces; 680 grams)
- 9 ounces instant mashed potato flakes (255 grams; plus milk, butter, and other ingredients needed to make the mashed potatoes)
- 1 cup chicken gravy (from a jar; can substitute brown gravy)
- 1 cup canned or frozen corn
- ½ cup shredded cheese (use cheddar cheese or a 3-cheese blend with mozzarella cheese, cheddar, and Monterey jack)
I purchased a KFC bowl so I had the right proportions of ingredients for this KFC bowl casserole recipe. I’m pretty sure KFC uses instant mashed potatoes, but feel free to use homemade mashed potatoes if you’d prefer. Also, KFC goes fairly light on the cheese, but you’re always welcome to add more.
For the spicy famous bowl, add a drizzle of hot sauce on before serving. You can use pieces of cooked chicken tenders or chicken nuggets if you don’t have popcorn chicken.
How to Make KFC Chicken Bowl Recipe
Here are the step-by-step instructions:
- Cook the popcorn chicken according to the package directions. Oven: Tyson’s Anytizers popcorn chicken gets cooked for 15-20 minutes on a baking sheet at 400F (200C). Air fryer: Use my directions for air fryer popcorn chicken.
- Make the instant mashed potatoes according to the package instructions. For Great Value instant mashed potatoes, bring 4 cups water, 6 tablespoons butter, and 1 teaspoon of salt to a boil on the stovetop. Remove from heat and stir in 1½ cups milk and the 9oz box of potato flakes until it is the desired consistency. (You can also make the potatoes in the microwave.)
- Heat the gravy and the corn on the stovetop or in the microwave.
- Assemble the KFC bowls. Divide the mashed potatoes between four bowls and top with gravy. Sprinkle the corn, cheese shreds, and cooked popcorn chicken between the bowls, and enjoy!
This mashed potato bowl KFC recipe goes heavy on the potato, just like KFC does. Feel free to use less potato, more chicken, more or less gravy, etc as you prefer.
While this recipe is best fresh, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave on high for 1½-3 minutes.

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule
This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). Is a KFC Bowl unhealthy? Is the KFC famous bowl bad for you? While I don’t like to categorize foods as good or bad, I wouldn’t consider the KFC Famous bowl the most nutritious fast food choice. It has a high sodium and calorie content, and no non-starchy vegetables. That said, it’s difficult to find a healthy, well-balanced meal at KFC. Diners should consider their experience an occasional indulgence, rather than a dietary mainstay. Making my copycat KFC famous bowls recipe is one way to lower the sodium. You could also decrease the carbs and calories in this dish by swapping the potatoes for mashed cauliflower. Nutrition information is for one serving of the copycat KFC famous bowl, and will vary depending on the brand of chicken and potatoes you use.
