Homemade Bolognese is the way to go here. You can use my air fryer Bolognese sauce with ground beef (it’s a spin on Giada’s traditional Bolognese sauce). Alternatively, make a vegetarian Bolognese pizza with this tempeh Bolognese sauce recipe

A pizza stone or pizza pan is best for this recipe. If you don’t have one, a dark cookie sheet works for cooking pizza too.

For the best results, cook the pizza according to the directions on the package of pizza dough. If you don’t have this information, you can try the cooking time and temp I’ve given above.

How to Reheat Meat Sauce Pizza

You can reheat leftover meat sauce pizza using my Reheat Pizza in Air Fryer directions. Keep leftover Bolognese sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or freeze it for longer storage. Leftover pizza can also be safely kept in the fridge for up to 3-4 days, but the crust may become stale within a day or two.

FAQs

What are the Pizza Bolognese calories?

There are 643 calories in one serving of this pizza Bolognese recipe (¼ of the pizza or two slices). The precise calories in your Bolognese pizza depends on the crust and sauce you use, as well as your portion size.

What is the difference between meat sauce and bolognese?

Bolognese is much thicker and meatier than American-style tomato-based meat sauce.

What are some good Bolognese pizza toppings?

I think a simple sprinkle of Parm and basil is best on Bolognese pizza. However, you can use any of your favorite toppings for pizza here. Peppers, onions, black olives, Italian sausage, sliced cherry tomatoes, and pepperoni are some tasty options.

What are the Bolognese pizza origins?

Bolognese sauce has its origins in Italian cuisine, and is named for Bologna, Italy. It is typically served over a flat pasta in Italy but is found in spaghetti Bolognese in other parts of the world. Though the origins of pizza and Bolognese are Italian, these two traditional Italian foods are used together in a non-traditional way in Bolognese pizza.

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule

This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). The addition of the thick meat sauce on homemade pizza makes it a hearty meal, and it may help picky eaters get a bit more protein. I really like the combination of Bolognese sauce and pizza, and found it more filling than pizza with thin tomato sauce.
Bolognese sauce typically contains some veggies beyond tomatoes (like celery and carrots). To round out the meal, I’d add some side salads for even more vegetables (and fiber). Try the accompaniment salad or the vegan spinach salad.
