My boiled radishes recipe is a simple keto side dish that tastes like new potatoes. When you boil radishes, they get milder as they cook, and lose some of their sharpness and bitter flavor. Learn how long to boil radishes and how to know when radishes are cooked. I love to serve boiled radish with chicken, pork, or beef for an easy weekday dinner idea.

⭐ Boiled Radishes Ingredients

Here’s what you need to boil radishes:

  • 1 lb trimmed red radishes, sliced into halves or quarters (454g)
  • 2½ cups chicken broth or water

That’s all you need to make simple boiled radishes. However, radishes are much tastier if you sauté them a bit in a cast iron pan after boiling. Here’s what you need to finish the radishes on the stovetop:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese and chopped chives or green onions (optional, for serving)

Feel free to use your favorite spices if you want to change things up. Thyme, rosemary, lemon pepper, and paprika are some more ideas. Cooked crumbled bacon is a nice addition to these radishes after cooking.

You can also use daikon radish (AKA white radishes) in this radish recipe if you chop them small enough. Boiling daikon radishes may make them more palatable if you normally find them bitter. However, don’t skip the sautéing step or they’ll be mushy instead of crisp.

➕ How to Boil Radishes

Here are the step-by-step directions for how to make boiled radishes:

how to make boiled radishes

Clean the radishes and trim them. Halve the radishes, or quarter them if they’re large. Put the cut radishes in a medium-sized pot with the chicken broth.

Bring the pot to a boil over medium heat, then simmer the radishes for 15-20 minutes until fork tender.

Drain the radishes and carefully pat them dry with a clean paper towel. This will help them to crisp better on the outside.

Melt butter in olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the radishes, garlic powder, parsley, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping and stirring occasionally. Serve with a sprinkle of Parm, plus chopped chives or scallions.

Store leftover boiled radishes in a covered container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Freezing radishes will change their texture.

How do you know when radishes are cooked?

Boiled radishes are finished cooking when they are fork tender. Their bright red outside should mellow into a pale pink. If your radishes are too bitter after cooking, they may be undercooked (or you may just have some extra bitter radishes).

What’s the best way to eat radishes?

The best way to eat radishes depends on your personal preferences. If you prefer crisp, peppery vegetables, raw radishes may be best for you. If you think raw radish is too bitter, making boiled, steamed, or roasted radishes are other healthy ways to eat radishes.

My favorite way to eat radishes is this air fryer radishes recipe. Air fried radishes turn out crispy on the outside with a tender inside. Oven baked radishes turn out similarly, but they take more time to cook.

Boiled vegetables tend to end up too watery in texture for my taste. However, if you love the comforting softness of boiled veggies, you’ll love this recipe. Steamed radishes are another way to cook radishes, and you can put them in a food processor to make mashed radishes.
