The Costco apple pie (item number 1408372), is among contenders for the best store bought apple pie, IMO. It’s cinnamon scented, with hearty bites of fresh apple, a soft cobbler-like center, and a crisp golden brown crust. Sure, it may not be grandma’s pie, but when you need a bakery apple pie, it’s definitely a delicious option.

I guess I should make a disclaimer here that I believe there is no bad apple pie. That said, nearly all reviewers I’ve read seem to love this dessert, and my family agrees with the consensus. It made a wonderful addition to our holiday table, so consider it for your Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter celebration.

The Costco bakery double crust apple pie weighs a hefty 75 oz (over 4.5 lbs!), perfect for feeding a crowd. (Double crust simply means it has a top pie crust and a bottom pie crust. This is in contrast to the Costco apple crumble pie, a crumb-topped pie sometimes available in Canada.)

You can serve the Kirkland apple pie chilled, at room temp, or heat it up. Costco apple pie is wonderful reheated and served with whipped cream or a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. (Get tips on reheating below!)

➕ Costco Apple Pie Ingredients

Here are the ingredients that go into the Costco apple pie recipe:

  1. Apples
  1. Enriched wheat flour (flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid)
  1. Sugar
  1. Vegetable oil (soybean and/or canola, palm, palm kernel)
  1. Water
  1. Food starch- modified
  1. Dextrose
  1. Salt
  1. Cinnamon
  1. Citric acid
  1. Malic acid

Ingredients info was correct at the time of writing, check the nutrition label for the most current info. The first ingredient in the Costco Kirkland Signature apple pie is apples, followed by flour and sugar. I’d say the main ingredients are pretty much what you’d expect from a pie.

I’ve heard that Costco used to sell an apple pie with organic apples. I was not able to find this option in my local stores.

The one thing to notice here is that this apple pie definitely counts as an ultra-processed food. It has preservatives and other additives you would probably not add to apple pie from scratch. This is a price we tend to pay for convenience.

Are Costco apple pies vegan?

Costco’s bakery apple pie contains no animal-derived ingredients and appears vegan on the surface. However, the sugar used may or may not have been passed through a bone char filter. Additionally, Costco pies are not made in a dedicated space and may have had cross-contact with milk and eggs.

Is Costco apple pie gluten free?

No, Costco apple pie is not gluten free. The second ingredient in these Costco pies is wheat flour.

Is Costco apple pie kosher?

The Costco apple pie I bought did not have the Kosher mark. According to this discussion, some Costco bakeries offer many kosher items and others don’t. Check your local Costco if you strictly follow a kosher diet.

Is Costco apple pie halal?

Most vegan foods are considered halal, excluding those containing alcohol (including vanilla extract). Since the Costco apple pie contains no natural flavors or extracts, it may be halal. Ask at your local Costco bakery for the most accurate dietary info.

Costco Apple Pie Allergens

Costco apple pie contains wheat and says on the label that it is “produced on equipment that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and sesame.” In short, this product is not made in a dedicated facility, and there is a risk of cross-contact with many major allergens. If you have a food allergy, Costco warns to “read the ingredient statement carefully.”

🔪 How to Cut a Costco Apple Pie

To cut apple pie from Costco, take a sharp knife and slice it into 8-16 wedges. The first slice of pie always comes out a bit messy, but it tastes just as good as the others. For serving Costco’s apple pie with neater slices, chill it, cut it, then reheat the slices.

If you have Costco pie crust lovers in the house, consider cutting them a slice from the outer edge. Those who love a soft cobbler with tender pastry may prefer a scoop of pie from the middle for the center crust.

🥧 Costco Pies

Aside from apple pie, here are the other types of pies at Costco:

  • Costco Pumpkin Pie
  • Costco Pecan Pie
  • (Frozen section) Costco Apple Pie Rolls
  • Costco Chicken Pot Pie
  • Costco Shepherd’s Pie

Please note that these are current options I’ve found at US Costco stores. Costco pie types may vary by destination (particularly if the location is in Canada or another country).

I used to see a Costco lattice apple pie in stores, but it appears to have been replaced by the double crust pie. If you don’t want a fresh bakery pie, the Costco pie rolls are a tasty alternative. They come with a delish caramel sauce and taste like a Costco caramel apple pie.

Costco also sells savory pies in their prepared foods section. Look for the Costco pot pie and shepherd’s pie for easy meals to add to your menu rotation.

🌡 Does Costco apple pie need to be refrigerated?

Costco sells their apple pies on a table at room temperature in the bakery. Though you do not need to refrigerate Costco apple pie, refrigeration will allow for a longer shelf life.

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule

This is a level 3 recipe (weight maintenance and active lifestyles). Is Costco apple pie healthy? As always, it depends on what you’re looking for.
The first ingredient in Costco’s apple pie is fruit, but I wouldn’t depend on pie as your main source of fruit intake. (Bummer, I know.) That said, fruit pies do tend to be lower calorie options compared to pecan pie and chocolate cream pies.
This Costco pie crust is made with vegetable oil instead of butter. Using veg oil is likely cost saving for them. Nutritionally, it means the pie is likely lower in saturated fat than pie crusts made with butter.
Why is Costco apple pie so good? Apple pies and other pies contain that magical combination of carbs and fat with low protein that is easy to overeat. Additionally, the hint of sugar baked into the flaky crust and cinnamon apples really come together to make something delicious.
Yes, it’s true that a storebought pie isn’t equal to homemade. If you’re short on time and looking for something close though, we thought the Costco apple pie was a good option. It’s fine to include occasional treats in an overall healthy diet, and we enjoyed this pie over the holiday season.
Nutrition information is for 1/16 of the Costco apple pie. Double these nutrition values if you cut the pie into eighths.

    1. Hi Dave, I agree! It appears to be a vegetable oil pie crust, instead of one made with solid fats (like butter, lard, Crisco, etc.) like I’d usually do for a homemade pie. The King Arthur website has an oil crust recipe if you wanted to try to make a copycat Costco pie 🙂 Summer

  1. I like the apple pie but I think would would taste so much better is if Costco starts making strawberry pies (just putting strawberries in the inside instead of apples but leave the crust the same. Another excellent addition that Costco should consider is making graham cracker crust with strawberry filling with a little bit of whip cream on top. Now that would be delicious!

    1. Hi Suzy, love these ideas! I think sometimes they might have strawberry rhubarb pies, but I think they tend to show up in stores during the summer. It’s freezing out here right now, and I’ve definitely hit that point at the end of winter where I’m craving the summer foods. Strawberry pie sounds so perfect!

  2. This was the worst pie I have ever purchased from a store. It was so tart that the whole thing went in the trash. Yes, it was that bad! I know times are hard, but they aren’t giving these pies away and a little sugar and cinnamon goes a long way and this pie tasted like it had neither!! Never ever again. if this is your only pie choice, skip the pie!

    1. Hi Jonna, What you’re describing sounds very unusual, like the Costco bakery local to you messed up the recipe. I’m pretty sure Costco’s return policy allows you to return food, even if it was opened: https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1191 Either way, I’d consider going to customer service and talking to them about it, because it’s definitely not supposed to taste like there’s no sugar or spices at all. My whole family enjoyed it, and we’re a bunch of diverse eaters.
